This is likely to be

my last post of the year. Barring some stunning news in the next few weeks I will likely be on the internet as little as possible, the music news world is a little slow anyways so......

  • Jon Bon Jovi is not dead.
  • The Big Man still is.
  • The White Stripes are still broke up.
  • The Stone Roses are still coming.
  • There may be an announcement regarding Van Halen in the next few hours, days or months or sometime in 2013.
  • Guns N Roses (original lineup) may or may not reunite for the RR HOF, but don't expect anything beyond this.
  • Nickelback still sucks.
  • Unfortunately the rumors are no more Big 4 Shows, even if they are I am sure DFW may not be on the top of their list.
  • I believe this is the first year in a long time, possibly since it's inception, that I didn't attend a show at Starplex
  • Flogging Molly is coming as well.
  • Hey Justin Bieber, what are the Jonas Brothers up to now?

Elvis Has Left the Building

On this day in 1956 Elvis played his final Louisiana Hayride show, and the legendary phrase was born, by Horace Logan at the end of the show. The Louisiana Hayride could have been the the Nashville of the South, however part of the advertising parameters prevented the musicians from performing on the show from advertising such. Many of its performers graduated on the the Grand Ole Opry, as the Hayride would embrace younger and new artists, whereas the Opry, as it still is today, was a little more snobbier.

December 8th.....

Also on this day Gary Thain bass player with Uriah Heep died of a drug overdose, and Razzle from Hanoi Rocks was in the car crash with Vince Neil which lead to his death the following day. Gary is also a member of the infamous 27 Club. I hope we don't need to start a 12/8 club anytime soon.

Hubert Sumlin Dead

The blues great passed away at 80 years old. Hubert played with Howlin' Wolf's band and continued touring after Wolf's passing. I got to see him once at Eric Clapton's Crossroad guitar fest in Dallas, including all-star jams with the likes of Clapton, Jimmy Vaughn, Buddy Guy among others.

Random Post Announcement Updates

  • Van Halen scheduled big announcement never happened-the latest theory is that it was the Grammy's (Grammies?) putting forth the rumour they would appear and not the Van Halen boys themselves. For one the Grammy's suck, for two this is not a "reunion", that happened like 5 years ago, for three I would not put it past the Van Halen's to back out of anything they said they would do, and for four will this even make through a studio and tour without imploding-again.
  • However Motley Crue did make their scheduled announcement concerning a Las Vegas mini residency, congrats to the Crue boys as being the first metal act to do the Vegas thing.
  • Metallica is doing Black Album anniversary shows-I can't think of anything more boring than a show of one of the most overplayed metal albums ever.
  • Two drummers have passed away this week, Keef Hartley of various musical accolades, and Tom Roady recent drummer for Ricky Skaggs among many, many others.

Announcements

Van Halen are set to make a major live announcement at the Grammy (groan!) Nominations ceremony tonight-this is probably the worst kept secret in the music industry, expect a new album and 2012 tour announcement.

Tomorrow night on Piers Morgan Tonight Motley Crue are set to make a big announcement with clues being offered to fans on exactly what it might be. The current rumor is a Las Vegas residency, but there may be multiple announcements. Check out the links below for more.

  • Today is the 10th anniversary of George Harrison's death
  • Get"Nickelblocked" if you so desire, I will pass because then I won't be able to rip Nickelback on this blog
  • Ken Russell, director of the movie version The Who's "Tommy" movie passed away on Sunday-I have seen some of his other stuff as well and it is pretty much off the wall.
  • Also killed by death Elvis' Costello's dad-he actually released an album called Elvis' Dad Sing Elvis, but the Elvis he sung was Presley!?!
  • This is some older news but a music fan apparently killed himself over the Tinnitus he suffered from attending a Them Crooked Vultures show (who still haven't made it to DFW) several months ago without the earplugs he usually wore at shows. I am still not sure what to think about this, I have often posed the question to some of my friends if you would rather be deaf or blind, and I always chose blind so I could at least listen to music. I remember attending Ozzfest one year and leaving about half deaf, which lasted several weeks. Scary stuff.....
  • RHCP and Flogging Molly have announced 2012 tours.
  • Man LULU is really getting ripped, I don't think it's that bad-but I liked St. Anger too....

Random Against the Machine

  • Doyle Bramhall Sr. has passed away, a collaborator with both Jimmie and Stevie Ray, one of his last shows was right here in Funkytown. I about crapped my pants in the wee hours of the morning upon reading this under mistaken assumption they were talking about Doyle II....
  • Also passing rapper Heavy D
  • I was out of town last week so I missed National Metal Day 11-11-11
  • Rammstein have announced their North American Tour-and Dallas is on the bill.....
  • I believe I am going to see Adam Ant as well.
  • I think the petition to get Nickelback banned at the Detroit Lions Thanksgiving day has failed......what a shame.

GWAR guitarist passes

Cory Smoot, also known as Flattus Maximus, passes away on road to Canada. I am not a big fan of Gwar but nevertheless.........
 Gwar guitarist dead

SIGN THE PETITION!!!!

There is a petition to ban Nickelback from the halftime show for the Detroit Lions Thanksgiving game. From the website:

The Change.org petition reads: “Do we really want the rest of the US to associate Detroit with Nickelback? Detroit is home to so many great musicians… and they chose Nickelback?

Barry Feinstein Passes

I have been holding off on this for a few days, thinking of something appropriate to do. I think the best way is just to show a little bit of his work, it speaks for itself.

Other non Scott Ian news

  • I hate award shows, and I suppose so do the Black Keys after receiving the above  MTV Music Award.
  • SMiLE, the "lost" Beach Boys album is being released. Or as far as it made it anyways.
  • Poison is being sued for "stealing" several songs, including "Talk Dirty to Me", a little friggin late don't you think? Well they did it to Led Zeppelin years after the fact. Good artists borrow, great artists steal.
  • Stone Roses shows are selling out in minutes over in the U.K. I don't know if we will see the same effect in the U.S. but I plan on attending.

Scott Ian says

  • There should be more U.S. Big 4 dates, in his opinion. They played more than 10 European shows but only a few in America. Three of the bands are in for a full tour, the only hold out is Metallica, which is the band that got this together in the first place. One can only hope.....
  • But, there will be no more S.O.D. According to Scott, S.O.D. is done and he sees no reason to revitalize it. I had my chance to see them a few years back and missed out. My loss....

They're Back......

Concert Update

  • I guess when you go to enough concerts you will get a bad show every once and a while, and when you go to three concerts in a span of 11 days I would say your odds increase. I had given a quick update on DAC previously in this blog, Roger Daltrey was last week-not a bad show, but missing a certain element, specifically a Townsend, and I am not talking about Simon either. Not a bad show, just not a great one.
  • NOW-The suck ass Allen Event Center. The show as Sunday night, which was bad enough as it was, Thin Lizzy opened, followed by Black Label Society and Priest headlining, for their "Final World Tour" (notice this is not their "farewell tour" anymore). Let's just say the Allen Event Center was not built for it's acoustics. The distortion was terrible and if you didn't know the words to songs you were pretty much screwed. Having seen Priest before and knowing what they should sound like pretty much made the show intolerable. I will not be returning to this venue without further proof that this situation has improved.
  • This is a rare situation-I have no current tickets to any upcoming shows, and not sure what I am going to see next.

Another Charlie Daniels Band member dies

Longtime keyboardist Joel “Taz” DiGregorio passed from injuries sustained in a car wreck. Joel co-wrote many of the band hits including The Devil Went Down to Georgia. I haven't got to see these guys yet and I am hoping it isn't too late. As previously mentioned in this blog former member Tommy Crain passed away earlier this year.

Concert Update

  • Saw David Allan Coe Friday night at Billy Bob's-he played about 50 songs, just not the whole song. Having not seen him as a headline act wasn't expecting this.
  • Tonight is Roger Daltrey playing "Tommy" at Nokia in Grand Prairie, my buddy wanted to go so I am tagging along.
  • Sunday is Judas Priest in Allen, I am planning on being there so it will be 3 concerts in 9 days.
  • Guns N Roses, or Axl and a bunch of other guys, are still up to their same shenanigans-I am glad I saw them in their heyday.
  • In non concert related news Mikey Welsh, former bassist of Weezer has been killed by death. And apparently he predicted it.

Random Death Updates

  • Steve Jobs, creator of the iPod & iPhone has died. MP3's were around long before the iPod but there is not doubt he pushed digitized music to the forefront of the music industry-iTunes is the worlds largest online music retailer.
  • Folk guitarist Bert Jansch passed. I am not familiar with his work but he was an inspiration for quite a few big names.
  • Marv Tarplin, guitarist for Smokey Robinson and the Miracles passed. Interesting trivia fact-he was the guitarist for a group called the Primettes, who morphed into the Supremes after his departure.
  • Sylvia Robinson-founder of Sugar Hills records passed. You guessed it-Sugar Hill Gang, Grandmaster Flash etc. recorded on this label.
  • You can see details of all the above at The Music's Over
  • Jani Lane's official cause of death-Acute Ethanol Poisoning-was it just a matter of waiting on the official word from the toxicology reports?

Random Here, Random There, Random Everywhere

  • The two L.A. Guns camps are having a mini pissing war (still)
  • Jessie Dupree, lead singer of Jackyl, was in a pretty nasty motorcyle accident.....
  • Get your fine wines here you can choose from Ratt, Kiss, Warrant
  • Got tickets for David Allan Coe at Billy Bob's Friday
  • The Flaming Lips are now recording a 24 hour song, which will be sold encased in a human skull, of which there are only five of, of which all five are sold out....

Jerry Haynes aka "Mr. Peppermint" passes

Those of you who grew up here know who I am talking about-The beloved host of the Mr. Peppermint show has passed away. Mr. Peppermint ran for nearly four decades here in the DFW area with more than 6,000 episodes. You, Muffin the Bear and Mr. Wiggly Worm will sorely be missed. Now you may ask why I am posting this on a music blog-Jerry was none other than the father of Gibby Haynes of Butthole Surfer fame-not that Jerry needs this accolade to stand on his own right, R.I.P. Mr. Haynes.

Random BULLSHIT

  • Nirvana's Nevermind is celebrating it's 20th anniversary including a deluxe re-issue with some bonus material. In addition there are numerous tributes and re-broadcasts happening, too many to list here......there is a certain group of people out there who call them overrated or I was never a fan of their music etc. I call BULLSHIT! Anyways like them or not they were the last big thing to happen to rock music.
  • Guns' N Roses (or Axl and a bunch of other guys) has a fall tour planned including a Dallas date-I believe last time they tried this they didn't make it to Dallas.
  • Blackie Lawless and the gang are planning on a 30th anniversary tour with three sets. W.A.S.P. was the first band I ever saw in concert, opening for Iron Maiden.
  • The remaining members of Queen are organizing their own tribute band!?!
  • Today is the anniversary of Bob Marley's final on stage performance in 1980.

R.E.M. DISBAND

R.E.M., arguably one of America's greatest bands, have decided to call it quits. I got to see them once on one of what became increasingly  rare tours-Not necessarily one of my favorite bands but definitely held in high regard during their heyday and beyond.

The demise of the CD

There is a report out that CD's will be defunct by 2016-probably signaling the end of the retail music store as well. If you are in your currently in your 40's consider yourself the last generation to have used all of the formats of modern recording-the LP, 8-Track, Cassette, CD & MP3 (you can throw in Reel to Reel as well). Do you  remember going to the "record store" and just browsing for music, the discount bin, shirts and posters etc. Hey I love shopping online but......

In a Sign That the Apocalypse is Surely Upon Us...

Nickelback is releasing a new album and scheduling a tour, with two singles set to come out simultaneously. I suspect they are releasing one song and giving it two different names. I also suspect that this is not a new album but merely a compilation of songs from their previous albums with each tracked renamed. One day this madness will end....

NO TAILGAITING FOR YOU.....

A rescheduled Buffet show was sparsely attended due to it being on a weeknight and a no tailgating policy due to a history of alcohol related deaths at previous Buffet shows in the area. This is why we decided several years ago to rent an RV for all Buffet shows and not drive. I am not saying that the decision made by the venue/promoter was the right or wrong decision it is just that we decided it would be in all of our best interests not to drive after such events. The cost for us was a little more than the couple of hotel rooms we would have rented anyways so it made good sense on our part and we could all enjoy the festivities without arguing about who was going to drive. The hypocrisy of this is of course that any concert or sporting event you attend alcohol is heavily promoted by such venues and promoters-in fact you could argue that by outlawing tailgating at any event would result in higher profits due to the fact that all alcoholic beverages would have to be bought inside at inflated prices. Like I said I am not looking to make judgment on such decisions I just don't think it is as cut and dry as presented-the focus here should be that people lost their lives due to an alcohol related incident, not because of tailgating at an event. • Back in 1968 Zeppelin played their first gig together as The (New) Yardbirds
  • Also on this date Keith Moon and Warren Zevon died
  • Check out This Day in Music for more tidbits each day-I tried a feed into this site but couldn't get it to reflect the correct date
  • In other news Iggy Pop broke his foot and the Stooges tour has been delayed & Buffalo Springfield have pushed back their reunion tour until 2012.
  • Looking at tickets for Blondie right now........

Rand-Halen

  • No Van Halen news to report, just trying to come up with variations of the word "Random"-I think they are working on a new album though, according to my "sources" (my Van Halen freak neighbor)
  • Bruce Dickinson  piloted one of the first post Hurricane Irene flights out of NY, and Sebastian Bach's New Jersey home was literally destroyed, including the loss of Skid Row master tapes and live recordings.
  • Speaking of Maiden, I just listened to Ryan Adam's acoustic cover of Wasted Years.....
  • Buddy Holly will get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on the 75th anniversary of his birth, never, ever underestimate what this man meant to Rock and Roll-the inspiration for hundreds of artists.
  • Bon Scott's mum, Isa Scott has died....

Jani Lane...

This story gets a little weirder every week. First off the autopsy was inconclusive and they will have to wait for toxicology reports to get back before the true cause of death is ruled. Then there is the note found on the body "I am Jami Lane" supposedly put there by someone who knew him, and then the hotel staff's refusal to verify if he was dead or not and/or offer any assistance in the situation. Anyways Jani Lane's appearance on That Metal Show has been moved up to this Saturday with a special introduction by Eddie Trunk, the episode had not been scheduled to air until October but they obviously felt the need to move it up in the schedule. Check out Rock News Desk for more on the above and tune in to VH1 this weekend if you feel so compelled.

Ridglea Theater

The Ridglea Theater is being restored as close as possible to it's original incarnation. The movie theater seats will not be restored but tables and chairs will be installed for live music events and theater productions. I doubt we will see some of the bands that have hit it in it's previous incarnation, Reverend Horton Heat, Flaming Lips and Spoonfed Tribe to name a few, much less the last year or two of it being a death metal haven but it will be interesting to see who they get to come along for the ride....

Rand-DOOM

  • Another person has died as a result of the Indiana State Fair stage collapse, making that the second since I posted and 7 total. Lawsuits have been filed, there are still dozens injured and limited information is being released so there could be more bad news on the horizon........
  • AND-5 dead at a Belgian festival last Thursday from a violent storm that swept through the area, and there are more serious injuries involved, what the hell is going on with concerts this year.
  • Two famous song writers have died-Nick Ashford and Jerry Lieber, both had song writing partners that worked with them and were a very important part of the early sounds of rock and pop. There accomplishements are too wide too mention here but I will thrown these out, follow the links above for more info:

Randomapolloza

  • Stages keep falling, people are dying and getting injured-the third such collapse in the last few months happened last weekend-I neglected to report the first at a The Cheap Trick show as we were on vacation and it was old news by the time I got back-I believe they refused to play a show after that as it was administered by the same stage company, then The Flaming Lips had an issue with one of their stages and now Sugarland-these are all weather related but wait till the lawyers get a hold of this.......
  • No results from Jane Lane's autopsy-but a bottle of vodka and pills were supposedly by his bed-Johnny died one night, died in his bed. Bottle of whiskey, sleeping tablets by his head........
  • The original Black Sabbath have reformed.
  • Dave Mustaine is floating rumours of a supergroup-Mustaine, Ellefson, Ulrich and Hetfield-I just want a Big Four show within driving distance of DFW.....
  • OK there is a shitload of shows in October, including Judas Priest that I am trying to sort through right now...

Jani Lane Found Dead

Jani Lane, former lead singer of Warrant was found dead in a hotel room. The cause of death has yet to be confirmed but Jani struggled with alcoholism, which led to his on and off again relationship with Warrant and finally his dismissal. I had the opportunity to see Warrant many times, never going specifically to see them but usually as part of a multi-bill show, the first time being with The Cult and Bonham at the now defunct Reunion Arena. Jani taped an episode of That Metal Show scheduled to air Oct. 1 on VH1, I believe they started last years season with a tribute to Dio, looks like this years season will include a somber note as well.

Update from below

We hit two shows with a couple of our good friends last weekend-Nashville Pussy/Reverend Horton Heat at HOB in Dallas and KIX /Whitesnake in Durant, OK. Both shows were great and it was our first time for us to visit the Choctaw Casino and Event Center. While at the casino we hit the pool early in the day and hung around for a few hours and met Doug Aldrich, current guitarist for Whitesnake and formerly of DIO and Bad Moon Rising. Doug was nice enough to hang around and talk to us for a while and THEN come back and offer us backstage passes. Needless to say we took him up on this, got our passes at the show, got a Meet and Greet with David Coverdale and another post show visit with Doug. Doug is a great guy and the amount of time he spent with us as just a few fans, just talking and telling stories like any of us would do with our friends is greatly appreciated. Hopefully we will run into him again one day......

Kings of Leon

After cutting short their show Friday night at Starplex, which some of my friends attended, the entire U.S tour has been cancelled. According to my "sources" (the above mentioned friends in attendance) Caleb was drinking the entire night. According to the article he was suffering from heat exhaustion and dehydration, as well as vocal cord issues. I will let you put it all together yourself......

Dan Peek, Founding Member Of America, Dies

Dan hadn't been with the band in quite a while...I saw them once in some form or fashion.

From Pollstar:

Dan Peek, a founding member of the popular 1970s band America and singer of high harmonies on hits that included “A Horse With No Name” and “Ventura Highway,” has died, his father said Tuesday. He was 60.

Amy Winehouse Dead

At 27....After her failed comeback bid the singer was found dead at her home, it is being reported as a drug overdose but no official autopsy until the next few days. She was praised for her talent but had only been in the spotlight recently for her behavior and drug use. Her last album was in 2006-who knows what she could have become had she more control over her life-now a member of the infamous 27 Club....how about a picture of her in her better days....

Randomabration

  • I have heard the crowd at the AAC for Rhianna's show was calm and orderley but began leaving quickly upon the onset of the fire-could you have imagined if that place was full, only 12,000 or so in attendance.
  • Michael Todd, bassist for Coheed and Cambria, was arrested after apparently robbing a drug store demanding Oxycontin, including a bomb threat-I would assume he is no longer in the band.......
  • Michael Burston, aka Würzel, guitarist for Motorhead for 11 years starting in 1984 has died from heart disease.

Happy 4th of July America!

Riot Fest

Will include "Legacy" Danzig-The event in Chicago will have Danzig as it's headliner including members from Samhaim and Doyle Von Frankenstein.. Apparently Glen is doing three sets including members from his current band. Sounds awesome.

Rand-OM-Rama

  • Amy Winehouse canceled her European Tour after a horrible start-she hasn't put out an album since 2006 anyways-that chick is just plain fried....
  • Erasure is touring-including a stop at HOB in Dallas
  • Clarence Clemons will be honored in Jersey tomorrow by flying flags at half staff? Isn't that a military/government honor?
  • There are still a lot of bands coming to the DFW area over the summer-the only problem is picking something and/or finding something worth going to.....
  • We attended the FWSO Star Wars Laser Lights Concerts in the Garden-the lasers were malfunctioning and one of my kids got hit in the head with a firework-and I ain't talking about a bottle rocket-luckily he A-OK and has a great story to tell.....

The Big Man Passes...

Clarence Clemons passed away last Saturday night at 69 from complications related to his stroke a couple weekends ago. Not just an original member of E. Street Band, but jammed with the Dead, Jerry Garcia and numerous others. His contributions will be missed. Pollstar article below.

E Street Band Sax Player Clarence Clemons Dies

Randominator

  •  WOW-I haven't read the book but may very well have to do so. "Ticket Masters" explains the reason behind the rise of concert ticket prices and service fees and it is a little shocking: It alludes the artists and their managers are really the ones to blame-Ticket Masters
  • Meanwhile the String Cheese Incident is right in the middle of all this for apparently suing Ticketmaster and actually winning control of some their own ticket sales-String Cheese Incident
  • As reported Clarence Clemons is not doing well but is showing signs of recovery-From The Boss himself: "By now, many of you have heard that our beloved comrade and sax player Clarence Clemons has suffered a serious stroke. While all initial signs are encouraging, Clarence will need much care and support to achieve his potential once again. He has his wonderfully supportive wife, Victoria, excellent doctors and health care professionals, and is surrounded by friends and family.
I thank you all for your prayers and positive energy and concern. This is a time for us all to share in a hopeful spirit that can ultimately inspire Clarence to greater heights."

Randominization

  • I finally got my concert list updated-Buffett is now tied with Metallica...
  • I think we are forsaking the Buffett concert next year in lieu of a golf cart. In other words I will still see you in the parking lot.
  • The Vans Warped tour ain't what it used to be.......
  • My next show is actually the Star Wars Laser show with FWSO at Concerts in the Garden-with my upcoming schedule I may not get to see anyone else before Reverend Horton Heat-but I am looking....
  • The Willie Nelson 4th of July picnic has a pretty group of headliners.

Coachella Twice

Apparently the Coachella organizers are going for two weekends this year. Know that necessarily doesn't mean twice the amount of performers-they plan on having the same acts both weekend. I am guessing a minimum of 20% difference between the acts for each weekend. Lineups yet to be announced-you can get in on the presale this weekend for 10% down and eight monthly installments. A three day pass will set you back $270.00

The mighty Judas Priest have announced their North American Tour......

I waited as long as I could to update the recently seen bands list-don't worry Buffet will take the top in a few weeks. I have not been able to update my blog recently but there isn't shit going right now anyway. It is the lull before the summer concert music storm.....

Poly Styrene dead at 53

Poly Styrene of X Ray Spex has passed. They are best known for "Oh Bondage, up yours!" but my personal favorite is "Warrior in Woolworths" both of which are part of my ultimate punk collection. Not ultimate as in snobby-just a collection of some of my favorite punk songs.

Has left Judas Priest after 40 years. The tour still goes on but...is it still their last??

I have stared at the Somewhere In Time "album" cover numerous times over the years...Album Cover Secrets

They did not include Moving Pictures by Rush however:

1. There are people moving pictures.
2. There are people crying because the pictures are emotionally moving.
3. There is a crew filming "moving pictures". (Back)

Smashing Pumpkins Bassist

The latest bassist for the Smashing Pumpkins, Nicole Fiorentino, is not one of the Siamese Dreams girls. I am continually seeing this on the internet and would like to put this issue to rest. Nicole was born in 1979 and Siamese Dream was released in 1993, Nicole would have been 13 or 14 because the cover was shot specifically for the album....

What is it with Billy Corgan and female bassists anyways?

  • Sammy Hagar was abducted by aliens-that would explain his multiple personality disorder: Red Rocker, love songy Van Hagar, Cabo Wabo mini Buffet, and now supergroup member. Do supergroups ever work out or last long? Nonetheless I have seen Sammy several times (in several different versions) and would do so again-Sammy Abducted!
  • Pinetop Perkins dies in Austin...Pinetop
  • Once again there is a shitload of shows slated for the DFW area this year-you can start here with 12 pages of shows going into October.

Nickelback has only written one song, they just keep changing the lyrics to it.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Man these guys are going crazy-first off the current Crosby & Nash tour. Second Neil Young is embarking on a small (I think) solo tour. 5 Artistic Geniuses Who Only Became Great After Selling Out

Selling Out

Although this article does bring up some interesting points I take it with a grain of salt.

  • So the Beatles changed "everything about themselves" and then got big-real big. So what do you call it the second time around when they changed again i.e. after they discovered hallucinogenic drugs.
  • The only two Nirvana albums I really listen to are Bleach and Insecticide
  • The Sex Pistols didn't change the face of music, although they were extremely popular for a short period of time. The New York Punk Scene- and those that followed, LA, Washington DC etc. are were where the real punk music was made. Where would we be without The Ramones, Misfits and Bad Brains just to name a few. Not that there is nothing wrong with a good Sex Pistols song I just get tired of them getting all the credit.
  • What the hell is "selling out" anyways....
