Thank you Metallica

Metallica has had their say over the last few days concerning "final tours", being the first metal band to headline Glastonbury, despite an online petition to have them removed because Hetfield is narrating the bear hunting series "The Hunt" on what is left of the History Channel, and having the first metal band to headline not being a British band (well who's fault is that Glastonbury??). Iron Maiden doesn't want to play your festival anyways.....

  • Hetfield calls out KISS and The Scorpions on launcing "farewell tours" and then rescinding here.
  • He did leave out Priest - as you can see from the shirt below they were the ones questioning the British band thing.....
  • "Glastallica" opening video below.
  • And then finally inviting over 100 fans onstage during their set.

Friday Updates

  • Judas Priest has announced a US tour - remember the last tour they announced? The one that would be their last "tour", the one that K.K. Downing called them on and left the band.
  • They are playing at the Allen Event Center - the same place I saw them on their final tour, and we left early because the sound was so bad if you didn't know the words you were screwed.
  • Here's the deal - they didn't say they were done playing live, ala their appearance at the Fun, Fun, Fun Fest in Austin later this year. But they did say they were done "touring".
  • AND of course I have tickets to Motley Crue's "Final Tour" in a few weeks at Starplex.
  • In the department of non final tours - Phil Collins has donated his extensive Alamo artifacts collection, thought to be the largest held by an individual, to a Texas museum. I can't find exactly which museum but nevertheless, he stated it might as well not be in his basement and be where everyone can appreciate it.

Thursday Updates

  • King Diamond is launching a rare full production tour ending with his appearance at the Fun, Fun, Fun Festival in Austin - and the next to last stop is HOB Dallas.
  • Cool article on Richard Cole, Zep's road manager.
  • Interesting gallery of bands with only one original member - there is a few that might surprise you - including Deep Purple and Dropkick Murphy's - Flogging Molly, however, still features all original members.
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd is in the above gallery as well. There is an agreement that they must maintain two pre-plane crash members in order to call themselves such. The basically have exploited this by having Rickey Medlocke on the roster, who briefly played with them as a second drummer. I am going to be nice here and hold my comments.......cough, cough (bullshit), cough.
  •  Interesting tidbit from This Day in Music. On this day in 1977 Elvis played his last live show, dying two months later (allegedly) - Colonel Tom Parker was born on this day in 1910.

Sweet Child 'O Mine

I had a few updates to post today until I saw this from Ireland DOE Road Safety- I'll just post them tomorrow......

I am also going to include this from the New Zealand Transportation Agency from a while back - even though it features no music it delivers the same message.

Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays & FRIDAYS

  • SOOOO.... I saw Buffet on a Thursday for the first time.
  • At a drive in movie theater.
  • Down the road from my house.
  • With only about 1,100 people.
  • And you could basically walk up and be standing about 5th row -even if you went to get a tasty beverage.
  • Startle-gram review here.
  • The Landshark girls were there giving out merchandise - they ran out of flags but we eventually "obtained" one after the show with a few other fans.

  • Corey Taylor is working to put together a tour of all the "masked" bands: Slipknot, Mushroomhead, Gwar and Mudvayne.
  • I got an email from The Edge today to win tickets for a band. I haven't listened to that station since who knows when. It is one thing to know the band's name and not know their music - but when you don't even know who they are in the first place?
  • Gerry Goffin passed away. Once married to Carol King he penned quite a few standard classics - such as the one below. (I don't always know who these people are beforehand but it is proper to acknowledge them.)

Casey Kasem - Soon to be Headed to the Great Juke Box in the Sky - Updated

There are conflicting reports - although the judge has given Kerri the right to "pull the plug" it is not for certain she implemented such procedures yet.

End of life procedures have been implemented by his daughter Kerri, whom a judge had recently put in charge of his medical care in lieu of his wife Jean, who is Kerri's step mother. Basically they are withholding food and water as this has been determined by doctors to cause him more harm than good, and according to his daughter these where his wishes. There will probably be an intense battle over his estate (80M) once he passes on. A few tidbits below:

  • Obviously he was the host of American Top 40, Top 20 and Top 10 in radio format and America's Top 10 on the boob tube.
  • Was the voice of a number of cartoon characters, most famously Shaggy on Scooby Doo.
  • Jean played Loretta Tortelli on the Cheers sitcom.
  • Kerri works with Nikki Sixx on The Sideshow Countdown and Sixx Sense (I had no idea this even existed!).
  • He has two other children from his first wife and one other child with Jean.

Holy shit....

Mid-week Updates

  • So George Strait set an indoor attendance record the other night, appropriately in Texas at The Death Star, for his last show of his last tour, and we were in attendance. I haven't been to very many country shows, and probably won't attend that many more relative to the amount of "rock" shows I have seen - but that was one worth seeing.
  • Am I allowed to list everyone who played with him on the sidebar? They performed two songs each with George and all were in attendance for the three song finale. That's five songs each.
  • Morrissey is a pompous ass....at least he didn't blame it on "burning flesh".
  • The Kinks are allegedly getting back together. I am not sure what made Dave change his mind but he has been vehemently against it for many years.
  • This article - has some great comments no matter your opinion either direction......
  • Happy Birthday to the man with the least beard in ZZ Top, Frank Beard.
  • The video below is right "circle pit" - because I don't see any mosh pits, just people running. But I do hope someone took out the DB in the wife beater at 1:54.

THURSDAY Updates

  • Metallica is currently scheduled to headline Glastonbury coming up later in June. But not if some of the "fans" have their way as there is an attempt to get them banned from the festival for Hetfield's love of guns and hunting. Iron Maiden refuses to play the festival saying it's basically pompous and snobby. In much cooler festival news Bruce will lead a mock dogfight of WWI era planes over Sonisphere.

  • So Duff MAY return to Guns. Let the rumor mill begin - I am not sure Slash wants anything to do with it.
  • So for the last few months I kept reading about a act called Fish. Let's just say one of the music sites I follow can be quite erroneous with some of their reporting and grammar - the last I saw was an article citing "George Lynch of Dokken". But there is an act called Fish as well as Phish.
  • Brett Michaels has probably used up another one of his lives - I think this is the fourth.
  • I could have seen if they had done some sort of tribute thing, but the Beastie Boys are officially no more.
  • IF you are in NY in late October, AND the band's health holds together, AND you can manage to snag a ticket - try to catch one of the Allman Brothers finals shows at the Beacon Theater.
  • There is officially a proposal for a statue of Glen Danzig in Austin - riding a dragon.
  • Man that whole Casey Kasem thing has spiraled out of control - changes in conservatorship, hospitalization, raw meat throwing and Scientology. It is just too much to put here. Link.
  • So Doug Aldrich has left Whitesnake, amicably, to pursue other interests. Doug is a great down to earth guy and we hope to meet him again one day. As you can see by the chart below at the time he left he was the longest tenured guitarist in Whitesnake, alongside Reb Beach, who now holds that position. That is not a small feat as it is well know that Mr. Coverdale controls all aspects of Whitesnake and most members are hired hands. And see that black album line in 1987 where just about every member switched- that was the release of the "Whitesnake" album that propelled them into mainstream success - most of the core band members who played on the album were basically fired before a video could even be made - Vandenberg was the exception as he was hired during the recording process and had a small contribution to that album.
