Final Post of the Year

http://artinunity.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/one_more_saturday_night_600w.jpg?w=590&h=583
Once again continued from last years last post, which was continued from the previous years last post. HAVE A GREAT NEW YEAR!!!

  • I think I can count the number of shows the Stone Roses have actually performed since their "reunion" on one hand.
  • Meg and Jack when will you come back.....not that Jack isn't busy.
  • We can only hope he retires - but it is just a stunt.
  • I made both Starplex and Nokia this year.
  • Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys are once again making their annual Marchish era trek through again - a little less than 30 days apart.
  • That final date for George Strait tour is commanding a high price right now - it will be interesting to see what happens as it gets closer.
  • With that being said a lot of major tours skipped the DFW area this year. I think we have a supply demand issue in this area. With the supply being more than the demand.
  • And once again just a few, but not all, we have lost in the last year - some very recently. But their music lives on.....

Final December Era Post

December era continued...

  • Dec. 17 1982 - Karen Carpenter makes her last live performance. She would eventually pass in February of the next year from heart illnesss related to her eating disorder.
  • Dec. 20 1973 - Bobby Darin dies.
  • Dec. 22 1987 - Nikki Sixx dies - for two minutes. Pronounced DOA upon arrival at a hospital he was obviously eventually revived with two adrenaline shots to the chest. Pulp Fiction anyone?
  • Dec. 22 2002 - Joe Strummer, from the only band that matters, dies.
  • Dec. 23 1964 - Brian Wilson suffers a nervous breakdown during a flight while on tour with the Beach Boys. He does not tour with the band and becomes a near recluse for decades...
  • Dec. 23 1985 - Raymond Belknap and James Vance shoot themselves. This led to an infamous lawsuit against Judas Priest alleging the song Better by You, Better Than Me influenced their suicide via subliminal messaging. The frivolous lawsuit was eventually dismissed.
  • Dec. 25 1995 - Dean Martin dies.
  • Dec. 25 2006 - James Brown dies.
  • AND ON THIS CHRISTMAS DAY IN 1968 - Led Zeppelin arrived in the US for the first time ever in preparation for their debut tour. They would go on to conquer all......
  • Dec. 28 1983 - Dennis Wilson dies from drowning.
  • Dec. 31 1982 - Max's Kansas City closes down.
  • Dec. 31 1984 - Rick Allen crashes his car and loses his left arm. Despite this he still continues to play for Def Leppard to this day.....
  • Dec. 31 1985 - Ricky Nelson's chartered plane flight crashes in Texas killing him and six others. The rumor is freebasing cocaine caused an on board explosion.

Updates out the Wazoo...

  • Unfortunately Ray Price has been moved to hospice after being discharged from the hospital for treatment of pancreatic cancer. We got to see him once in the Live Music Capital of the World at the original location of Willie Nelson's Backyard.
  • In a turn of events The Beastie Boys have proceeded with their lawsuit against GoldieBlox despite GoldieBlox dropping the "Girls" parody and issuing an apology. I mistakenly listed it as "resolved" however I don't think GoldieBlox ever dropped their preemptive suit.
  • The Cheap Trick lawsuit involving now former member Bun E. Carlos has been dismissed by the Delaware federal court stating that it should be decided by an Illinois federal court.
Dueling Band List
    • Beastie Boys vs. GoldieBlox
    • Hawkwind vs. Nik Turner's Hawkwind (Resolved)
    • Black Flag vs. Flag
    • Oren Kaplan vs. Eugene Hutz (Gogol Bordello)
    • The Turtles vs. SiriusXM
    • Bun E. Carlos & David Frey vs. Cheap Trick
    • Pandora/Spotify etc.  vs. Musicians
    • Scott Weiland vs. STP
    • Current version of Beach Boys vs. any former Beach Boy who is not in the current version
    • Former Vandenburg members vs. Adrian Vandenberg
    • J. Geils Band vs. John Geils/Francesa Records
    • Live vs. Ed Kowalcyzk
    • Queensryche & Geoff Tate
    • T&N and Dokken
    • Kyuss & Kyuss Lives!
    • Creedence Clearwater Revisited and John Fogerty
    • War and The Lowrider Band
    • Blood, Sweat and Tears and David Clayton Thomas (kind of)
    • Steppenwolf & John Kay's Steppenwolf
  • Check out The New Wave Superfriends and the Punk Rock X-Men
  • #1 has departed from Slipknot. Founding member Joey Jordinson is no longer with the band. They haven't let Paul Gray's replacement take the stage with them during live performances, he plays back/side stage, but they are going to have a harder time doing this with a drummer.
  • And in an ongoing series exclusively on this blog!! The December era continues:
    • Dec. 11 1964 - Sam Cooke shot dead by the manager of the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles. The shooting was ruled a justifiable homicide after the manager claimed she acted in self defense.
    • Dec. 11 1969 - The Rolling Stones began filming their infamous Rock & Roll circus - which did not see light of day until finally released in 1996.
    • Dec. 12 1957 - Jerry Lee Lewis secretly wed his cousin. The move would eventually ruin his "rock" career but......
    • Dec. 12 1985 - Ian Stewart died of a heart attack - in the waiting room of his doctors office.
    • Dec. 12 1970 - The Doors played their last live show with Jim Morrison. What many may not know is The Doors continued releasing music and playing live after Jim's death. It was an abysmal disaster.
    • Dec. 12 2007 - Ike Turner dies.
    • Dec. 15 1956 - Elvis Presley plays his last show at the Louisiana Hayride. The legendary phrase "Elvis has left the building" was coined here by Horace Logan. If you don't know the history of  the Louisiana Hayride, Elvis and how it could have been what Nashville became you owe yourself a little research.
    • Dec. 15 2006 - Ahmet Ertegun, co-founder of Atlantic records, died form injuries suffered from a head injury sustained earlier while falling at a Rolling Stones concert. His death eventually led to the O2 Tribute Show mentioned previously in the December era.

Updates

  • I am in no way on any kind of schedule for updates at the moment.
  • Got great seats (as a Christmas present for my better half) for George Straits final date of his "final tour" along with approximately 100,000 others at The Death Star. There is a slew of special guests at this particular show:
    • Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, Eric Church, Sheryl Crow, Ronnie Dunn, Vince Gill, Faith Hill, Alan Jackson, Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride and Lee Ann Womack and Asleep at the Wheel as the opening act....
  • There have been a number of bands cancel scheduled shows at SeaWorld due to the "Blackfish" documentary. Not having seen it I have found that most controversial documentaries can easily be angled to the presenters cause and you should always find a counterpoint. For example Fahrenheit 911 vs. Farehype 911....
  • Rod and Ron are reforming The Faces. Rod is getting away from all that crooner crap he has been putting out for seemingly forever.
  • So Robby Krieger and John Densmore are talking about performing again after reuniting for what would have been Morrison's 70th birthday. I just hope they don't bill it as The Doors.
  • Billy Joel will set up a permanent residency at Madison Square Garden on a monthly basis - permanent as in forever or until demand rescinds. Any guesses how long this will last - I am just going to say quite a while.
  • I love me some SNL Christmas music.....actually just about any kind of Christmas music will do.

The December Era

From some reason this particular time of the year has had some significant moments that happened in music history. Unfortunately most of them don't coincide with the Christmas spirit but nevertheless they are major markers in music history - I have tried to include some brighter moments as well. This post will cover through Dec.10th with updates past this as necessary. All this information and more can be found at http://www.thisdayinmusic.com/

Dec. 3 1979 - The Who concert at The Riverfront Coliseum: 11 people were trampled to death and 26 injured when fans rushed the door as they thought the concert had started. There were only a few thousand reserved seats with the remainder being "festival seating" and when the crowd, who were waiting outside in frigid weather, heard The Who performing their sound check, they rushed the closed doors mistakenly thinking the show had started. For long after Cincinnati banned festival seating at concerts.

Dec. 4 1971 Smoke on the Water: At a Frank Zappa concert at Montreaux Casino in Switzerland an audience member shot off a flare gun and "burned the place to the ground". The incident was immortalized in song by Deep Purple.

Dec. 6 1969 Altamont: At a free festival in Altamont, CA a fan was stabbed by the Hell's Angels, who had been hired for security purposes, during the concert. There were several other deaths and two births as well and many other events surrounding this situation.  The show was headlined by the Stones and included Jefferson Airplane, Santana, The Flying Burrito Brothers and CSN&Y - The Grateful Dead were scheduled to play but after arriving were concerned about the mood and tension in the air and refused to play. Being held just a few months after Woodstock what had started as being another gathering of the flower power nation turned into just the opposite. You can read further details here and check out the Gimme Shelter documentary in which many of the events, including the stabbing, are depicted.

Dec 6 1949 - Leadbelly dies.
Dec 6 1998 - Roy Orbison dies of a heart attack at 52.

Dec. 8 - I consider this day the "other 27 Club" - interestingly of which none of the individuals below are a member of.
  • 1980 - John Lennon, while returning to his New York apartment, was shot 5 times by Mark David Chapman.
  • 1982 - Marty Robbins dies from complications following cardiac surgery.
  • 1984 - Nick Dingley aka Razzle from Hanoi Rocks was involved in a wreck as a passenger in a car driven by Vince Neil, eventually dying from his injuries. Neil was drunk at the time and hit an opposing car while speeding, seriously injuring these passengers as well.
  • 2004 - Dimebag Darrell and four other people were shot by Nathan Gale at a Damageplan show in Columbus, OH.
  • IRONICALLY - Jim Morrison was born on this day in 1943 - who would eventually go on to become a member of the infamous 27 Club.

Dec. 10 1967 - Otis Redding killed in a plane crash - his biggest hit, Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, had been recorded three days earlier and Otis never saw its release.
Dec. 10 1999 - Rick Danko dies in his sleep.

In brighter news for this era on the 10th of December in 1977 CBGB opened its doors and in 2007 the mighty Led Zeppelin performed at the O2 arena in their first concert in 19 years and the first full concert since John Bonham's death.

Overdue Updates

A few leftover from before the holidays......

  • Quiet Riot have announced Jizzy Pearl as their new lead singer. With that being said Frankie is the only "original" member.
  • Christine McVie has hinted she would like to return to Fleetwood Mac - but they may not let it happen.
  • The much beleaguered Alamo historian Phil Collins has hinted they he may make some new music - and mentioned Genesis as well.
  • I should have an update Friday with Decmber 8th coming up.....
  • GoldieBlox, who not only preemptively sued the Beastie Boys but Rick Rubin, Island Def Jam, Sony Music Publishing and Universal Publishing as well has backed off their stance and removed their parody version of "Girls".
  • So I went to a "rap" concert the other night. I have seem rap bands on multi-bill shows, Lollapalooza etc., before but never as the show. It was OK, but the scenery was great.
  • Remember I mentioned the Maiden touring juggernaut? They are also one of the fastest growing companies in the UK.
